8/15/2023 0 Comments Diamond dust overlay![]() ![]() To the eye, an abundance of micro diamonds dust would take on a pearlized look. So far, my best answer is that diamond dust can appear in two sizes, large and micro. So, what exactly are we seeing in a pearlescent finish? I’ve given this a lot of thought. As such, I sometimes see variations, differences and nuisances that don’t yet have common usage names in the World Of Iris. I’m constantly looking over the horizon in search of that “new iris look.” My Iris From The Future are just that. ![]() One more closing thought on this pearly topic. You knowwhat real pearls look like, so hopefully you can transpose the two. So now you know exactly why I’ve included the strand of pearls in the picture. Instead of a mother-of-pearl look, I camera delivered a white-haze look. The incredibly beautiful, pearlized finish. How do you capture a proper image of something that actually looks spooky?Ģ. The ethereal, other-worldly effect of the bronze infusion on the standards and on the shoulders. I could never capture on film SPOOKTACULAR’S two most important attributes:ġ. I realize that this is a tall statement, but I think that the flower is at least 50% better than it’s picture. What the human eye can see and a camera record, are not always the same. THE PICTURE: One of the reasons why I evaluated this iris for so long, was because I could never get a picture that was an accurate representation of SPOOKTACULAR so I gave up. Ü The combination of the above attributes produce a very rich and expensive looking flower Prior to SPOOKTACULAR, I had only seen a pearlized finish on a couple of pale blue iris and on expensive cars Ü The falls are adorned with a very rare and beautifully pearlized finish, some might say metallic, but the effect is identical to that of a pearl. Ü Shoulders of bronze-brown carry the ethereal effect to the falls Ü Noticeable smoky-bronze standard infusion give it a pronounced dusky, ethereal effect Ü The primary menthol-violet color is a sparkling improvement over the normal violet Ü Modern form, touching falls, abundant ruffles, and pleated. HIGH POINTS (What really “makes” it so SPOOKTACULAR? And, what’s with the pearls?) Beards: yellow-gold beards peak out at you, base of pale lavender. Falls: menthol-violet but lighter around beard, shoulders of bronze-brown add another focal point. Style Arms: the same dusky menthol-violet. Standards: menthol-violet with heavily infused midrib of deep smoky-bronze, diamond dusted. Yes, it’s a self, but done in an un-common color. Ok, so what exactly is so spectacular about SPOOKTACULAR? Let’s start with the technical description and then work our way toward it’s higher attributes.ĭESCRIPTION: the entire flower is an un-conventional hue of menthol-violet. ![]() I, actually came to love it more with the passage of time. But as you would now expect, I never found a single, major flaw with this flower. Looking back, I’m not so sure that I wasn’t actually “tougher” on seedling #0180 than many of my other introductions. Would SPOOKTACULAR become one of my Iris From The Future?Īided by my Seedling Evaluation Form (on this website), I meticulously went about the scientific process of looking for a single good reason why NOT to introduce this gem. Once I see something that I do like, I immediately shift gears and begin to looking for things that I don’t like. I’m extremely careful not to let a personal bias cloud my judgment. SPOOKTACULAR.īut just because it was “love at first sight,” didn’t mean that SPOOKTACULAR would not have to pass my rigid evaluation system. And everything else about the plant was “Spectacular.” So it immediately took on the garden name …. Upon seeing the flower, it’s future name immediately sprang to mind! The effect of the bronze overlay on the menthol-violet standards gave it an ethereal, “Spooky” look. But, in less than the blink of an eye, the story got even better. For me, this extraordinary experience has happened but once. He’ll see a maiden seedling on its first, opening-day, and intuitively know that he has a winner. On very rare occasions, a hybridizer will be treated to a great spectacle …. Spooktacular (Kanarowski 2012), TB, M, 35” ![]()
